In chapter one of The Giver we learn from a memory from Jonas that once Asher was late to school when he saw salmon. In chapter one, Jonas is sitting in the classroom when Asher comes running into the classroom saying, “I left home at the correct time but when I was riding along near the hatchery, the crew was separating some salmon. I guess I just got distraught, watching them”. Why is this important? Why would something like Asher getting distracted by salmon be important. Well, why would he be distracted by salmon. When we first heard about this we thought nothing about it. Then as we kept reading the book we found out that in the community that The Giver takes place in they don't know what animals are. We see animals everyday in our world but the in The Giver they don't. If they don't know about animals what else don't they know about. Also why don't they know about animals. What happened or what did somebody do that makes this community not know what an animals are.
